For families using our Family Rooms at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, they might need to get their autograph book out when our volunteer, Kate Ryan, is on her monthly shift.
Kate is a National Hockey champion, and will be representing Australia in the Women’s Hockey World Cup in Barcelona next year.
Originally a primary school teacher, Kate has certainly not slowed down in retirement, volunteering for Ronald McDonald House and Northern Settlement Services where she assists refugees adjust to life in Newcastle. In 2017 Kate has travelled to Auckland, England, Ireland and Wales to compete in numerous hockey tournaments, and managed to fit in a quick trek to Mount Everest Base Camp.
Kate loves volunteering in the Family Room and for the ‘Friends of Ronald McDonald House’, where she has made many friends. She enjoys helping others and believes the services provided by Ronald McDonald House are crucial in helping families cope with having a sick child in hospital.
